The American International Automobile Dealers Association (AIADA) has announced Greensburg, Pa., dealer Jim Smail as the recipient of its David F. Mungenast Sr. Lifetime Achievement Award during its 47th Annual Meeting and Luncheon in New Orleans.

“Jim is truly the best of the best in our industry, leading by example in dedicating his time and resources to his family and a variety of community causes—in addition to running a successful dealership group,” said AIADA President Cody Lusk. “He truly embodies what this award is all about, and I can’t think of anyone more deserving of this high recognition.”

Smail is the President of Smail Auto Group, a group of ten new car dealership franchises that has been family owned and operated for over 78 years and provides employment for over 435 people. A longtime member of AIADA, he served as the association’s chairman in 2011 and has dedicated his time to other industry leadership roles, including serving as board member and past president of the Greater Pittsburgh Auto Dealers Association, a board member of the Pennsylvania Auto Association, and the Honda and Acura Dealer Advisory Councils.

In addition to his leadership in the auto industry, Smail also has made a tireless investment in his community. His business is a longtime member of the Westmoreland County Chamber of Commerce and supports multiple programs in the local school districts. He is also dedicated to breast cancer awareness—spearheading the “Smail Cares” campaign that has resulted in over $390,000 raised for awareness and local women’s health organizations—and has joined with the David Feherty Troops First Foundation to raise funds for military members who have been wounded while serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The David F. Mungenast Sr. Lifetime Achievement Award is presented by AIADA’s Board of Directors annually to an industry leader who possesses a similar community spirit and devotion to the international nameplate auto industry as its namesake. David F. Mungenast Sr. was known by family members, employees, and those in the industry as their founder, mentor, employer, and friend, and his legacy inspired the award. Summer Driving Safety Tips

Fiesta (3)

These next few months will see the streets, roads and highways packed with more vehicles than ever before. The weather is nicer, the kids are out of school, vacations are scheduled, summer road trips are planned. But before you hit the road, it is important that you check your vehicle and review summer driving safety tips.

  • Conduct a basic safety check of your vehicle. Check the levels of your fluids: oil, antifreeze and windshield wiper fluid. Check your tire pressure, wiper blades, lights, and A/C.
  • If you have children, be sure you're aware of heatstroke concerns that arise in warm weather. Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle.
  • Remember to share the road with other motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians. It will be crowded out there, so be aware of people who may not see you.
  • Have an emergency roadside kit stocked with a car charger for your cell phone, a first aid kit, flashlight, flares, jumper cables, gloves and blankets, and tools.
  • Be sure to have an updated GPS on hand (or a physical map or atlas, if you're so inclined) for your designated navigator to guide you safely to your destinations.
  • Don't forget water and snacks, and even entertainment for the passengers. Build a playlist of road trip songs, tablets with downloaded games, and a pillow to stay comfy.

Automotive Brands Score With On-Point Super Bowl Spots

Watch automotive Super Bowl 50 ads

Super Bowl 50 ads cost $170,000 per second. Per second.

That astronomical price doesn't mean that every brand hit it out of the park, though. Looking at you, puppymonkeybaby.

Automotive-wise, the ads were pretty entertaining, though.

A standout was the Honda Ridgeline commercial.

"Talking animals always amount to a well-received Super Bowl spot, and Honda took full advantage of the familiar trope with this Babe-inspired ad for the Ridgeline that featured a bunch of sheep belting out Queen's classic "Somebody to Love." Throw in a talking dog at the end and you have 70 seconds guaranteed to put a smile on even the saddest Panther fan's face." (Rolling Stone)

Honda's luxury relative Acura also had a good night with their NSX supercar spot.

Edmunds tweeted that, on their site, searches for the 2017 NSX skyrocketed, up 661%.

Just behind Acura on searches was Buick's Cascada convertible.

"Oh well done, Buick advertisers. There is a lot that is just great about all of this. First off, the fact that Odell Beckham is able to get his own Super Bowl commercial is pretty awesome in itself. The catch of the bouquet was masterfully done as well.

"Then, of course, we have the crown jewel of it all — the nice old lady dropping the, “She Odell’d it.” I mean, does it really get any better than that?" (FanSided)

Kia also tapped a celebrity for their ad, which was also considered a top spot.

"Christopher Walken is the perfect celebrity for a Super Bowl commercial. Add that to the perfectly punny concept of having him hanging out in a walk-in, no, Walken closet and giving inspirational life advice, and you have a winner." (Billboard)

IIHS Announces Changes to 2016 Top Safety Pick Criteria

Earning a Top Safety Pick award will be tougher than ever for automakers.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) toughened the criteria for vehicles to earn a Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ award.

In 2015, models with an "acceptable" rating in the small overlap test were able to qualify for either award, provided their other crash test scores were "good."

However, for 2016, the IIHS requires good ratings in all crashworthiness tests (small overlap front, moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests).
