Super Bowl 50 ads cost $170,000 per second. Per second.
That astronomical price doesn't mean that every brand hit it out of the park, though. Looking at you, puppymonkeybaby.
Automotive-wise, the ads were pretty entertaining, though.
A standout was the Honda Ridgeline commercial.
"Talking animals always amount to a well-received Super Bowl spot, and Honda took full advantage of the familiar trope with this Babe-inspired ad for the Ridgeline that featured a bunch of sheep belting out Queen's classic "Somebody to Love." Throw in a talking dog at the end and you have 70 seconds guaranteed to put a smile on even the saddest Panther fan's face." (Rolling Stone)
Honda's luxury relative Acura also had a good night with their NSX supercar spot.
Edmunds tweeted that, on their site, searches for the 2017 NSX skyrocketed, up 661%.
Just behind Acura on Edmunds.com searches was Buick's Cascada convertible.
"Oh well done, Buick advertisers. There is a lot that is just great about all of this. First off, the fact that Odell Beckham is able to get his own Super Bowl commercial is pretty awesome in itself. The catch of the bouquet was masterfully done as well.
"Then, of course, we have the crown jewel of it all — the nice old lady dropping the, “She Odell’d it.” I mean, does it really get any better than that?" (FanSided)
Kia also tapped a celebrity for their ad, which was also considered a top spot.
"Christopher Walken is the perfect celebrity for a Super Bowl commercial. Add that to the perfectly punny concept of having him hanging out in a walk-in, no, Walken closet and giving inspirational life advice, and you have a winner." (Billboard)
Football season is here, the Pirates are going to the postseason and all seems right with the world. And, with these outdoor sporting events, comes pre-game celebration: Tailgate parties.
"Like jazz and blue jeans, tailgating was born in the USA. The earliest example of tailgating at a sporting event took place in 1869 at a football game between Rutgers and Princeton, just a few years before the advent of the automobile in the U.S. For those not familiar with the term, tailgating involves the consumption of food and beverages in the back of a parked vehicle. Usually there's music playing on the car stereo to buoy the mood. The venue is most often the parking lot of a stadium or arena, before or after a sports game or concert. To indulge in this uniquely American event, you'll need good eats, strong drinks and a properly equipped vehicle." (Edmunds)
Wi-Fi hotspots, built-in glovebox coolers and in-cabin vacuums have made current lineups elite tailgating machines.
We reviewed and compared some "best-of" lists and picked the best-of-the-best autos to take to your tailgate.
Honda Fit It may be considered a subcompact vehicle, but the Honda Fit has an "amazingly accommodating cabin." (Edmunds) Keep up with all your sports news with a four-speaker sound system, an auxiliary audio jack and a USB port.
Mazda CX-5 "CX-5 is teeming with wheel-mounted controls, Bluetooth hands-free phone and audio streaming, HD radio, Pandora Internet radio and navigation system, pushbutton starter and three power outlets. The ample rear seating and up to 65.4 cubic feet of cargo space with the seats down aren't exactly throwaways, either, nor is the combined 30.5 miles per gallon." (The Street)
Honda Odyssey The Honda Odyssey, both Kelley Blue Book's "Best Buy" and also U.S. News' "Best Minivan for Families," houses an incredible interior feature. A vacuum. Messes happen. And they'll happen at a tailgate. But with the Odyssey, you can quickly sweep up the remains of a back-seat chip spill and keep on having fun.
Kia Soul "The Kia Soul's boxy design and large, airy cabin are great for tailgating. An available eight-speaker Infinity sound system with sharp sound quality and fun speaker lights keeps things festive." (Edmunds)
Ford F-150 "The best-selling vehicle in the U.S. for more than three decades running is the tailgate wagon of choice for a whole lot of the nation's fans. After a big upgrade for 2015, however, it just got a lot better.
"Throw a spray-in bed liner in the back and a cap on any F-150, and you get a fairly ideal tailgate vehicle. Throw in electric outlets, under-seat storage in the cab, LED spotlights and tailgate step in the back and you have yourself a better seat in the parking lot than you will anywhere beyond the club seats and luxury boxes in the stadium itself." (The Street)
The manual transmission may be scarce but its not dead. Each year's clutch-count decreasing because people simply don't want to fuss with pedals and shifters.
The people at Popular Mechanics, though, don't see the problem with a more captivating commute provided by a manual transmission.
"Shifting a manual transmission is not only more engaging and fun than flicking some dainty little paddles, it also requires more skill and makes the driver a better one."
While there are a few options on the market as far as cars that offer manual controls, three stand out among the rest.
"Ford's ultimate-performance Focus, the RS model, has eluded buyers here in the US for fifteen years. But for 2016, the rally-bred super hatch is no longer only for Europe. Even better news: This built-in-Germany monster with 315 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque will come only with a manual. That should keep this machine in the hands of those that appreciate its capabilities." (Popular Mechanics)
"Next to the definition of 'smooth and zingy' is a picture of the Civic Si—well, in our dictionary, anyway. Available as a sedan or a coupe, each looks zestier than its non-Si counterparts, along with a high-revving, 205-hp four-cylinder engine that makes 174 lb-ft of torque. Equipped only with a six-speed manual, the Civic Si delivers lively acceleration, while its lowered suspension and sticky tires let it tackle corners with aplomb, making it the most fun-to-drive car Honda currently sells." (Car and Driver)
"The Miata's sports car formula has lasted for more than a quarter century. The all-new 2016 model not only retains the easy-shifting and precise 6-speed manual transmission, but also elevates the entire Miata experience. It's still one of the best manual transmissions available on any car at any price." (Popular Mechanics)
There's no doubt that electric and hybrid vehicles have gained popularity in the past decade. This year's National Drive Electric Week organizers are predicting record turnout for the hundred-plus events Across the country. (Green Car Reports)
"National Drive Electric Week, September 12-20, 2015, is a nationwide celebration to heighten awareness of today's widespread availability of plug-in vehicles and highlight the benefits of all-electric and plug-in hybrid-electric cars, trucks, motorcycles, and more." (Drive Electric Week)
In the Western Pennsylvania region, drivers interested in attending an event don't have too far to travel. Seven Springs Mountain Resort's Mother Earth News Fair will include an Alternative Energy Car Show - a National Drive Electric Week event.
"The Mother Earth News Fair is a fun-filled, family-oriented sustainable lifestyle event featuring dozens of practical, hands-on demonstrations and workshops from the leading authorities on: Renewable Energy, Small-scale Agriculture, Gardening, Green Building, Green Transportation and Natural Health." (Seven Springs Mountain Resort)

Owning a vehicle comes with a hefty price tag no matter what your budget. But there's no need to sacrifice comfort, safety or style to secure a mode of transportation.
There are great cars that won't obliterate your bank account and they're all priced below 20k.
"The 2015 Ford Focus brings European design into Detroit showrooms. When shopping for new cars under $20,000 that are available in both hatchback and sedan form, the Ford Focus stands out. The Focus delivers exceptional handling for its price point, along with the availability of features like the Ford SYNC vehicle interface." (Autobytel)
"...[The Mazda3] is a pint-sized performance car that just happens to be a practical economy car, too. The steering is sports-car precise, and the suspension does a great job of limiting body roll, resulting in an athletic feel that's unmatched in this class. Both available 4-cylinder engines are smooth and peppy, and both are great on gas, too." (Autotrader)
"Since arriving on U.S. shores back in 1991, Kia has rapidly evolved from a purveyor of bargain-basement econoboxes into a stylish and fully modern brand that can compete with the best the mainstream market has to offer. Perhaps no model is as emblematic of Kia's progress as the latest Forte, a compact sedan that combines the value for which the automaker has become known with an attention-grabbing exterior design and a high-quality cabin." (Left Lane News)
"The 2015 Honda Civic meets and exceeds small-car buyer preferences for reliability, safety, fuel efficiency, quality, and value without so much as breathing hard. It’s everything you’d expect in a compact economy sedan, and so much more." (CarGurus)
"[The Soul] gives Kia an injection of, well, soul to complement its reputation for building competent cars that pack plenty of value." (Edmunds)
