Ask The Experts: How to Improve Your Gas Mileage

Ask-the-experts-gas-mileage

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT TO CHANGE YOUR AIR FILTER AND MOTOR OIL AND USE THE GRADE RECOMMENDED BY THE MANUFACTURER?
The oil and filter collects contaminants that can damage your engine if they are not removed regularly. The air filter will become dirty and restrict air flow. Replacing clogged air filters can improve your gas mileage by around 3.3%. Using a different motor oil can lower your gas mileage by 1-2% .

WHAT SUGGESTIONS ARE THERE FOR MY TIRES TO HELP INCREASE GAS MILEAGE?
Rotate your tires regularly. Keep your tires inflated according to specifications.  Correct tire pressure is determined by the size and weight of your vehicle the type of tires it uses, load hauled, and the type of driving the vehicle is intended for. Check your owner ’s manual for inflation levels. Also keeping tires properly aligned, can improve your gas mileage by around 3% .

HOW DO DRIVING HABITS IMPACT FUEL EFFICIENCY?
Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and hard braking) can be dangerous and consumes fuel rapidly. Accelerate slowly and smoothly, depending on traffic conditions try to maintain a constant speed and use cruise control when possible.

Ask The Experts: Battery Low Message

Ask-the-experts-battery-life

What does the Battery Charge Low or the Battery Low messages on my dash mean when they come on?
For vehicles equipped with the Battery Management System , this message occurs when the battery’s State of Charge (SoC) , has dropped below a predetermined level. The message is intended to inform you that the battery requires charging to guarantee proper performance under all conditions (extremely cold conditions, high electrical system demands, etc) .

What conditions make the Battery Low message appear?
Extended time spent with the ignition on , but the engine not running. Driving short trips repeatedly without a longer trip between them . Running high-demand electrical accessories, such as seat heaters, can make this situation even worse. Extremely cold weather is also hard on the battery.

How does the Battery Management System Work?
The system constantly looks at the battery’s charge level and determines the optimum charging rate for the current conditions in the vehicle. It provides a first indicator of low battery charge; so the system m ay occasion ally display “ BATTERY CHARGE LOW ” or “ BATT LOW ” on your dashboard when your battery falls below its optimum level of charge. This helps to ensure that fuel economy and battery life is both maximized.

What should I do if the Low Battery message comes on ? Does it mean that my battery needs replaced?
If you see the BATTERY CHARGE LOW or BATT LOW message, don ’t panic. It simply means that the battery’s charge is lower than it should be. This can be fixed by taking longer trips between shorter trips, minimizing unnecessary electrical accessor y usage (such as power seats) during short trips, and spending less time using electrical accessories while the engine is not running.

Ask The Experts: New Waterborne Paint Technology

Ask-the-experts-Ron-Lemley

WHAT IS THE NEW WATERBORNE PAINT?

Smail Collision Center is using PPG Envirobase paint. This is similar technology that is used by the manufacturer on many of the new vehicles on the road today. Waterborne paint cuts down on the pollutants that are generated by other collision centers using the solvent based system.

WHY DO WE USE WATERBORNE PAINT?

Waterborne  refinish basecoat is an effective solution for lowering VOC emissions—improving air quality and our environment. It also promotes the health and safety of employees.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS FOR THE CONSUMER?

By using PPG Envirobase paint, we can achieve a better color match, better adhesion, and better chip resistance compared to the typical solvent based product.

Ask The Experts: Tire Pressure

Ask-the-experts-Dan-Vukovich

How does the new Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) work?

Tire pressure monitoring systems continuously monitor the pressure in the tires through sensors located in the tires (direct system) or the use of wheel speed and other vehicle sensor s (in direct system). The information collected by the sensors is transmitted to an on-board processor that interprets the sensor signals and warns the driver when tire pressure is below the minimum acceptable level by illuminating a warning lamp

What does it mean if the TPMS warning lamp illuminates?

When the TPMS warning lamp on the instrument panel illuminates while driving, it means that the system has detected at least one tire with a pressure below the accepted minimum psi for the vehicle. The tires should be inspected and the tire pressure checked as soon as possible. The lamp will extinguish after the tires are properly inflated.

What does it mean if the warning lamp goes on and off?

On cold mornings, the warning lamp may illuminate for a short period of time and then extinguish. This type of warning lamp response is likely caused by marginally low tire pressure that dips below the warning threshold over night but rises to an acceptable level as the tires heat up through vehicle operation or an increase in ambient temperature.  The tires should be inspected and the tire pressure should be checked. The lamp should not illuminate when the tires are properly inflated.
